Colterenzio
Colterenzio, known in German as Schreckbichl, is a respected co-operative winery located in the rolling, vine-covered hills south of Bolzano in Alto Adige (South Tyrol), Italy. Established in the 1960s, Colterenzio has built a reputation as one of Italy’s leading white wine producers.
Started in the 1960s by 28 pioneering winegrowers and estate owners, the co-operative has grown significantly and now consists of more than 320 hectares of vineyards. Colterenzio has built a reputation as one of Italy’s leading producers of white wines, particularly from its well-regarded ‘Classici’ range, which makes up 60 per cent of its production. The winery is guided by a dedicated team, including Managing Director Wolfgang Raifer, who continues to push the boundaries of quality and innovation while maintaining the co-operative's strong traditions.
Colterenzio’s winemaking is distinguished by a focus on purity, precision, and the unique terroir of South Tyrol. The winery sources grapes from some of the finest vineyard sites in the region, benefiting from a diverse array of microclimates and soil types that enhance the complexity of its wines. The vineyards are planted with a range of grape varieties, including Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Lagrein. Colterenzio employs a meticulous approach to viticulture, with careful canopy management and precise harvest timing to ensure optimal ripeness and flavour. In the cellar, the winery blends traditional techniques with modern technology, using temperature-controlled fermentation to preserve the delicate aromas and flavours of the grapes. This commitment to quality results in wines that are fresh, vibrant, and true to their varietal characteristics, setting Colterenzio apart as a leading producer in the region.
When the cellar was renovated in 2009, the Colterenzio team decided to upgrade not only the architecture but also adapt the winery to renewable energy sources. Today a photovoltaic power station supplies over fifty percent of the winery's energy requirements with solar-generated electricity. Through solar panels and heat recovery system, the winery meets over seventy percent of its hot water requirements for cleaning bottling lines and tanks and heating offices. This focus on sustainability enables the winery to operate to be mostly energy self-sufficient.
