A subtle Chenin Blanc from two mature vineyard sites that is fermented inside a concrete egg. The nose suggests quince, pear and butterscotch, opening up to display a rich, creamy, toasty character. Rich and weighty, it is leavened and knit-together with bright acidity. Excellent persistence of flavour on the long finish. This showed great promise when it was younger, which is now being delivered. A magnificent wine to enjoy now and over the next 4-5 years.
Chenin Blanc '6Chen'
Meinert
Winemaking
Hand-harvested, cooled to 5°C, whole bunch pressing, oxidative style for vineyard nuances. Natural fermentation in concrete 'egg' tanks and oak barrels. Lees contact for six months adds midpalate texture and richness.
Press Review
95/100 - There’s toasty brioche and a nutty element on the finish. 6Chen is a Chenin Blanc-led wine with just a touch of Muscat d’Alexandrie, and the vines are planted on iron-rich decomposed shale soils. The wine was made using ambient yeast fermentation in a combination of concrete tanks and oak barrels, some of which were seasoned while others were untoasted, followed by six months of lees contact to enhance texture and richness. GS: A smooth and sleek mouthful: lactic, brûléed vanilla notes with toffee apple, fig and salted caramel nuances. BB: Lifted nose, curry spices – fenugreek, asafoetida – flint. Honey, spice and apple sauce, with smoky backnotes. Light feel, with creaminess on the finish. Complex and interesting. RJ: Crème brûlée, acacia honey, brioche, lime marmalade, nutty. Refined herbs, hints of delicate caramel, Indian spices. Lots happening, but light freshness.
