Meinert
Meinert is a boutique, premium wine estate in the scenic Devon Valley of the Stellenbosch wine region in South Africa’s Western Cape. With its elegant, terroir driven classics and innovative, approachable wines, Meinert caters to a wide selection of wine fans.
The Meinert estate was established in 1987 when Martin Meinert, a passionate winemaker with roots in the printing and publishing world and formal training in viticulture and oenology, purchased the original 11.5 hectare vineyard known as Devon Crest Farm. Since then, the property has expanded to around 16 hectares, planted with classic Bordeaux varieties and other carefully selected grapes. Martin’s hands on philosophy underpins Meinert’s distinctive wines, and in recent years he has been joined by Brendan Butler, a Cape Wine Master qualified winemaker who now plays a key role in both vineyard management and crafting the wines with a fresh and thoughtful approach.
Meinert takes a terroir driven approach to viticulture and winemaking, where careful grape selection and small batch production are central. The Devon Crest vineyards are home to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, among others, allowing Meinert to produce wines that reflect the site’s character and climate. Grapes for its cool climate varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling are sourced from trusted growers in regions like Elgin, adding diversity to the portfolio. The estate embraces classic and minimal intervention techniques, including fermenting with natural yeasts and ageing in French oak, so that each wine — whether a refined Merlot, expressive Cabernet or distinctive white blend — conveys personality, balance and a sense of place.
The Meinert estate emphasises sustainability in its broader philosophy of careful, quality led winemaking and vineyard stewardship. Its winemaker champions a sustainability and terroir expression philosophy, which prioritises respect for the land, thoughtful vineyard practices and producing wines that tell the story of their unique origins. As part of the wider Stellenbosch wine tradition, many producers in the region — including Meinert — are increasingly aware of sustainable farming’s importance to soil health, biodiversity and responsible agriculture, and this influence is reflected in how vineyards and cellar operations are managed to support long term environmental resilience.
