The Derelict Vineyard Grenache is always one of d'Arenberg's most distinctive wines. Named for a field discovered by Chester Osborn that had been untended for two decades or more, and yet its old Grenache vines had survived. Even young vintages have what the French might call 'beauté sauvage' - glorious, complex notes of wild berries, pepper, foraged mushrooms, gravel and iron. In this Cellar Release, these attributes are intensified and extended with the nuances of maturity. Furthermore, this particular wine's tendency towards untamed tannins has been mellowed with age, bringing about a totally irresistible, velvety succulence. Utterly awesome.
Winemaking
Small batches of grapes are gently crushed and then transferred to five tonne headed down open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. The wine is then basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of old French and American oak barriques to complete fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees, there is no racking until final blending and no fining or filtration.
