Italy
This month The Great Wine Co. celebrates the Stars of Italy, profiling the producers, regions and exceptional wines of this historied nation.
Wine in Italy pre-dates the Roman empire, and grape-growing and winemaking have flourished throughout the country’s vibrant history: From imperial nexus to a patchwork of powerful city-states, Duchies and Kingdoms, through annexation and eventual unification; boundaries have been drawn and re-drawn - across vineyards in some cases – but the Italian passion for wine has remained constant, and wine today is a central part of the Italian culture.
It is not surprising, given Italy’s unique history, that huge variety of wine styles are produced here – from the hot volcanic mountains of Sicily where Nerello Mascalese uniquely thrives, to the cool northern climes of Alto Adige where plantings have a distinctly Austrian influence. Italy is the largest wine producer in the world by volume, and wine is made in every one of the country’s twenty administrative regions, but three big boys account for nearly half of Italy’s wine production: Veneto, the home of Prosecco and Soave; Tuscany, the spiritual home of Sangiovese; and Piemonte, best known for superb Barolo and Barbaresco wine from the Nebbiolo grape.
Across the country, unique wines are labelled according to 119 IGP’s, 334 DOC and 77 DOCG classifications (the highest and most rigorous standards for Italian wine). To try them all would be the work of a lifetime, but this month, let the Great Wine Co. take you on a wine tour of Italy, introducing some of the producers and regions, and the ‘squisito’ wines that make this country so inspiring.
