Tasting Patricius Tokaji Aszu Bendecz 6 Puttonyos 2000

People outside of the wine trade assume that the job of a wine merchant broadly involves opening and drinking fabulous wines and enjoying lavish dinners. With more than half an eye on the former opinion, yesterday, a wet and bleak Wednesday afternoon in April, we open via Coravin a bottle of Patricius's Tokaji Bendecz from 2000.

Tom's tasting notes are below, but as a simple guide to what we thought of it, the spittoon that was brought along remained entirely superfluous!

This extraordinary wine can be found for sale on this site here

"This single-vineyard Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos has an astonishing fragrance, evoking baked peaches, dried apricots, beeswax, violin rosin, lemon-and-honey, exotic spice and antique wooden furniture. The combination of Tokaji's natural acidity with nearly a quarter-century's bottle age has integrated the sweetness, making for an overall impression of remarkable freshness and beautiful harmony. It tastes of lime marmalade and Seville oranges, followed by more baked peaches and dried apricots. This is fully ready to enjoy now, and promises to drink beautifully for another 20+ years" Tom King, Fine Wine manager, The Great Wine Co.
