An incredibly distinguished wine from the tiny, 1.4 hectare, El Bosque vineyard, planted on a deep gravel terrace overlooking the Ebro River. Sierra Cantabria's Eguren family recognised the similarity of this well-drained site to the great growths of Bordeaux, and the concentration and complexity of its miniscule annual yield are truly awesome. A wine for an extremely special occasion. The exceptional quality of the vineyard is reflected in the intensity of aromas and flavours, exquisite finesse and extraordinary length, and the ability to mature for many years.
Press Review
" The 2007 Finca El Bosque is purple/black in color with a perfume of wood smoke, graphite, truffle, espresso, black cherry, and blackberry. Full-bodied, voluptuous, and already complex, it possesses 8-10 years of aging potential. Its drinking window will reach from 2018 to 2037. Bodegas Sierra Cantabria is another outstanding Rioja estate owned and operated by the Eguren family. The highlight of my visit in May, 2010 was a vertical of their two renowned single vineyard wines, Amancio and Finca El Bosque. Not to be overlooked is their complete portfolio of new releases, several of which are superb values. The Amancio cuvee comes from a single vineyard of the same name. There is a severe triage in the vineyard before the grapes reach the sorting table. It spends 24 months in new French oak using a “200% new oak” aging regimen before bottling without fining or filtration. The Finca El Bosque Vineyard is a 4 acre parcel of Tempranillo planted on gravel in 1973. The wine is put through ML in new oak and spends 18 months in new, mostly French oak. "
Winemaking
Destemmed by hand with a rigorous selection of every grape. Cold pre-fermentative maceration takes place at 8º C over 3 days. Fermented in large French oak barrels at a temperature of 28º C with autochthonous yeast selected from their own vineyards. Pigeage and punching-down takes place twice a day during the first 8 days of fermentation and once a day during the last 5 days. The maceration on the skins continues for 18 days. Slow, malolactic conversion takes place is in barrel and ageing takes place in new French and Center-European Bordelaise oak barrels, where the wine ages for 18 -20 months.
