Riesling Grand Cru Geisberg
Trimbach
Press Review
" Picked with 16% potential alcohol, due to very small, millerandage grapes with super-healthy berries but no botrytis at all, the 2015 Riesling Grand Cru Geisberg is very intense and concentrated on the precise, fresh and perfectly ripe nose, where bright and lemony fruit and crushed limestone aromas are displayed. Rich, round and concentrated, this is a warm, lush, piquant and well-structured Riesling with a fine tannin grip. Bottled with 20 grams of residual sugar, the 2015 will benefit with each decade of bottle aging. Drink 2030-2050. "
Winemaking
Geisberg fruit has made up part of Cuvée Frédéric Emile for decades, however when Trimbach leased more Geisberg vines from the Couvent de Ribeauvillé, the nuns insisted on a separate wine to showcase this Grand Cru in pure form. This wine is bottle-aged for five years in the cellar before being released. The Geisberg Grand Cru is truly a jewel of Alsace - less than nine hectares of prime vineyard upon a steep slope facing due south and nestled between the Grands Crus of Kirchberg and Osterberg. The soils are derived from Muschelkalk marl, conquina, sandstone and gypsum, and old vines, ideal exposure to the sun and the small steep terrasses make it a unique and complex terroir. At night, cooling winds ('Tahlwendala') come down the valley from the high Vosges, checking ripening and promoting the extended, concentrating 'hang time' leading to wines of fantastic intensity, grip, complexity and ageing potential. This king of vineyard sites deserves the king of vines, and is thus planted entirely to Riesling.
