Teusner Wines
Kym Teusner and Mick Page founded Teusner Wines in 2001, saving ancient Grenache vines from destruction, and today craft characterful wines in Barossa.
Teusner Wines, founded in 2001 by Kym Teusner and Mick Page, started with a passion for preserving Barossa's old vine heritage. The pair launched the winery after overhearing grape growers contemplating the removal of 85-year-old Grenache vines, which inspired them to intervene and protect the vineyard. With an unconventional and determined spirit, Kym and Mick's commitment to supporting growers as partners and their focus on crafting wines they personally enjoy have defined Teusner's success. Today, Kym Teusner serves as the head winemaker, leading a team dedicated to creating expressive wines that reflect the Barossa Valley’s unique terroir.
Teusner Wines' winemaking approach is distinctly hands-on, with a clear emphasis on preserving the natural expression of the vineyard. The winery relies on traditional techniques, often favouring manual intervention over mechanisation. Grapes are carefully hand-picked, and each bin is meticulously crushed, sometimes by foot, to maintain the purity and integrity of the fruit. Teusner's philosophy focuses on minimal oak influence, allowing the vibrant character of the old vines—especially Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro—to shine through. This commitment to showcasing the true essence of the grapes and the vineyard sets Teusner Wines apart, resulting in wines that are celebrated for their balance, complexity, and sense of place.
Teusner Wines places a high value on sustainable viticulture, recognising the importance of nurturing old vineyards for future generations. By supporting local growers with fair compensation and fostering long-term partnerships, Teusner ensures that traditional, low-intervention farming methods are preserved and practised. This collaborative approach not only sustains the health of the vines but also promotes biodiversity within the vineyards. Teusner Wines is committed to reducing its environmental footprint, employing practices that respect the land and contribute to the longevity of Barossa’s cherished old vine vineyards.
