Farvie Grenache
Swinney
Press Review
" The 2022 Farvie Grenache hails from a warm and dry year, and this is the first time I've seen this wine—professionally or socially. The bouquet leads with graphite and raspberry leaf tea, iodine and crushed shells, rust and fresh blood, layers of white pepper and tobacco. Stylistically, I feel this 2022 is in line with the 2018, and it looks utterly sensational here today; it's elegant and complete, composed and detailed. It's very long through the finish and lingers and curls with wisps of incense spice, chalky tannins and Asian five spice. Ripper wine. Drink 2024-2042. "
Press Review
" Now that Farvie is a trio, and not a duo, and the Mourvèdre sits neatly in between the Grenache and Syrah in terms of hue, timbre and attitude, this Grenache seems more succulent, fragrant and blushingly attractive than ever. It is imperceptibly lighter, more rhubarb and pomegranate-tinged and creamier than ever. The colour is a crimson and carmine amalgam, and the nose is akin to a stroll through an Amazonian arboretum. It is sexy, and it knows it, and before it gets too lascivious, on cue, it firms up, dries out and ends with a vicious lick of stern acidity. After such a lavish welcome, this finish is fantastic because it snaps your senses to attention and reminds you that while Farvie Grenache is a consummate charmer, beneath the surface, it is a weaponised wine with extraordinary skill. "
Winemaking
Farvie Grenache is made exclusively from bush vine fruit that has achieved the 'sweet spot' of consistent, uniform ripeness at the Swinney family's finest Frankland River vineyard sites: on hilltop locations with ironstone gravel soils. Optimum ripening occurs at specific places within the canopy of individual vines, and the selection process involves a laborious three-pass harvest by hand. Once picked, 15% of the Grenache was whole-bunch co-fermented with 6% Mourvèdre - included for its fragrance and deep, gamey complexity. Fermentation was spontaneous, with wild yeasts, and after 10 days on skins, the wine was basket-pressed directly into large, seasoned French oak barrels for 11 months ageing before bottling with minimal sulphites and filtering; and no fining.
