Syrah from the Raupo vineyard in Marlborough's Omaka Valley, which has been fermented and aged in clay amphorae. It has intense aromas of white pepper and bright, juicy purple berry fruit, with exotic spice and freesia notes. It is crisp, crunchy and light-textured and yet with masses of personality and a hint of menthol on the finish. This is a vivacious Syrah that just happens to be a 'natural' wine. SO delicious!

" A naturally made, spicy Syrah with some real attitude that resembles a Languedoc red in its intense, garrigue-driven aromas. This is made from biodynamic Syrah, hand-harvested and fermented in small clay amphorae. Dense purple to look at, the aromas are classic Syrah – concentrated, black-fruit dominated (wild blackberry) spicy, with wild herbs and pepper. In the mouth, the wine is lively, firmly structured around a core of textured black fruit, firm acidity and finely-judged, ripe tannins. Fantastic to have this much intensity for 12% abv. Winemaking
The Syrah was hand picked in mid April at the end of our harvest. The fruit was 100% destemmed and placed directly into two clay amphorae. Both batches undertook fermentation naturally and were plunged gently daily. The fruit remained on skins for four weeks, where all vessels were covered and given a wet cap daily, and stored with no additions. Both components were pressed off, blended together, then returned gently into amphorae for four months for further aging and to undergo malolactic fermentation naturally. The amphorae were then racked gently into a small stainless steel vessel to clarify naturally for two weeks prior to bottling. It was bottled without any stabilisation, fining or filtration and without any added sulphur.

Beautiful syrah
Subtle, black fruited, soft, slightly tannic and ethereal - like an artists impression of Syrah! Changing in the glass all the time. So glad I tried it after meeting the winemaker's family at a shop tasting- gives a sense of purpose and story to the wine - fermented in amphora too so no oak imprint on this wine enhancing the purity even more.
