From northern Piemonte, Ghemme neighbours the better-known Gattinara, and its wines are potentially even more ageworthy. Ghemme Riserva requires a minimum of 48 months' maturation prior to release, which coaxes the Nebbiolo grape (known here as Spanna) into magnificent fragrance, elegance and complexity. With a transparent garnet-brick colour, the primary raspberry and violet notes are now fully intermingled with tertiary nuances. With a mouthwatering tang, and firm tannin structure, it is refined, elegant and long.
