The Monte Rosso vineyard lies at 1,000 feet in the Mayacamas mountains in Sonoma County. At this elevation, it is above the fog that so frequently affects California's coastal districts, and so experiences plenty of sunshine, tempered by the coolness of altitude. These conditions lead to fantastically intense, succulent black cherry aromas, with more than a hint of spiciness. Big, rich, velvety and utterly delicious. With decanting, this is a super-impressive wine young, although it will also reward extended cellaring. Marvellous.

Winemaking
Grapes are fed into small, open-top fermenters for a 3-day cold soak before primary fermentation. Following this, free-run juice is separated, and the must softly pressed. The wine spent a total of 26 months in barrels—72% new French oak, 16% new American oak, and 12% neutral barrels.

Fabulous Cabernet
This is simply one of the best Cabernet’s I’ve ever tasted, during a visit to the winery, beautifully smooth with great purity of fruit, super silky tannins and a wonderfully long lingering finish, top draw ?
