Kleinood
Kleinood is a boutique family-run wine estate in the picturesque Blaauwklippen Valley near Stellenbosch, South Africa, founded in 2000 by Gerard and Libby de Villiers. The name Kleinood means “small and precious” in Afrikaans, a fitting description for both the estate and its wines.
Gerard and Libby de Villiers were drawn to Blaauwklippen Valley’s natural beauty and potential. Gerard, a passionate engineer, designed and built the winery, while the family’s deep roots in South African viticulture have shaped Kleinood’s identity and values. Today, the estate is guided in the cellar by winemaker Lawrie Moore, who brings energy, dedication and a focus on crafting wines that reflect both their origins and approachable enjoyment.
Kleinood’s vineyards occupy around ten hectares of carefully chosen slopes, where Syrah is the star grape, complemented by smaller plantings of Viognier and Mourvèdre. Every block of vines is tended with attention and harvested by hand to ensure the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness. In the winery, grapes are meticulously sorted and handled gently to protect their delicate characteristics, and a mix of fermenters gives flexibility to nurture each parcel’s unique qualities. This hands-on approach, blending thoughtful site selection with sensitive winemaking, helps produce elegant Tamboerskloof wines that are expressive, balanced and memorable for wine lovers.
Sustainability is central to Kleinood’s philosophy, with a genuine commitment to caring for the land and its community. The estate is a member of the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative and employs natural pest control methods, such as using ladybirds in the vineyards, while solar panels help harness renewable energy for the winery. Vineyard prunings and organic materials are composted to enrich soils, and even the distinctive wine labels are made from recycled paper and hand-printed as part of a low-impact production ethos. Beyond the vines, Kleinood has actively supported local community projects, including building housing for employees and contributing to educational facilities, underscoring its broader commitment to sustainability and stewardship
