Uva-Cão, or 'dog grape' is allegedly so-named because its notable acidity deterred illicit harvesting: it was known as 'the grape that guards the vines'. But please don't be scared. Casa da Passarella has raised a cuddly pooch from assertive ancestors - matured to a rich, golden colour, this joyous, fun-loving wine romps around with effusive notes of honey, green tea, hazelnuts, vanilla, lemon marmalade, butter and mint. And what of that supposedly fearsome acidity? It has tamed to a frisky freshness, that balances and holds everything together. Unreservedly delicious. Good dog!

Press Review
Score: 94+/100 The 2020 O Fugitivo Uva-Cão was aged for six months in used French oak. This comes in at 13.1% alcohol. This obscure grape is known for high acidity. It sure shows some bursts of acidity and has an acidic core, but it is relatively tamed here, by the wood, the vintage and the winemaking. The acidity easily counters the modest wood impact. Then, it coats the palate while adding tension, feeling full-bodied yet energetic. This is very fine, a great food wine. I will be interested to see how this ages and develops. The first vintage here was only the 2018, so there is not a long track record, but this has a lot of potential. Drink 2022-2035.
