This delicious, tiny-production wine is made from biodynamic Syrah, Petite Sirah, Mourvedre, Grenache and Viognier from the Butler Ranch vineyard, which sits at 1,500 feet on the eastern edge of the California Coast Range. The first impression is of intense, complex aromas of spiced black fruit, cigar paper and espresso. This is followed on the palate by ripe tannins framing a juicy, generous texture which enhances its elegant black fruit, anise, and subtle spice character. The Butler will continue to develop layers of complexity with an additional five to ten years of cellaring. “This single vineyard blend was inspired by France’s Rhône Valley and merged with our Mendocino home. Biodynamics is a form of organic farming that emphasises the interrelationship of soil fertility and plant growth, drawing on Rudolf Steiner's theories that incorporates an astrological sowing and planting calendar.
Winemaking
The blend is predominately Syrah with the addition of Mourvedre, Grenache and Zinfandel for added complexity and interest. Each varietal was individually allowed to ripen to peak maturity before an extended harvest. The blend was aged for 24 months in French oak.

Big wine but a food wine too
Higher altitude vines equals rich but balanced fresh fruit - all black fruit and savoury counter points with lovely freshness despite its high alcohol. It matched beef in a black bean sauce! - it’s powerful, impressive and broad shouldered but has a freshness that works so well with food.
