Velo Flor is a Manzanilla that has been aged for 9-10 years, which is a lot longer than most. This brings about a wine with Manzanilla freshness combined to the richness and complexity of Amontillado, with a golden colour and intense aromas of cider apple, butterscotch, blanched almond and salted caramel. In the mouth, it has a rich, rounded smoothness, with the fragrance of golden apples being cellared over the winter, and a slightly gamey, charcuterie element. Long, silky and lovely, with much more complexity and concentration than normally found in this type of wine. Bodegas Alonso is the passion project of the Asencio family to rescue some of Sanlucar's greatest soleras: Fernando Mendez, Gaspar Florido and Pedro Romero.
Press Review
" The NV Manzanilla Velo Flor, presented in a Clavelin look-alike bottle, is filled with a wine that has clearly spent a long time under flor and is quite expressive, aromatic and powerful. It has Manzanilla character. This is a purchased wine as they still don't produce their own wines, even though the idea is to do so and even to acquire vineyards in the future. It has a pungent nose and a very saline palate, very balanced and persistent. A very good Manzanilla of considerable age, without any oxidative character. "
Press Review
" The manzanilla is bottled, sealed and labelled by hand and left unfined and unfiltered. Intense aromas of sea spray, almonds and hay continue on the long, yeasty, waxy palate that has a unique note of cider apples. A pricey but complex aged Sherry. "
Winemaking
Made from 100% Palomino, grown in several vineyards within the Jerez Superior region, this exceptional Manzanilla is aged for 9-10 years in 600 litre old American oak casks.

A taste of heaven
One of the most intense and characterful Manzanillas, which allows it to stand up to food with fairly bold flavours. We drank it with chips from the local curry house (with a subtle hint of onion bhaji) served with a quick homemade aïoli sauce. The combination was heavenly! A more authentic combo might be Patatas Bravas, but chips (with or without fish) work every bit as well. Update May 2024 - goes equally well with seasoned, dry-roasted peanuts.
