Greetings from Carrick
Laura on 5 Oct 2016
Tell us the story of the winery.
Pioneers, in the Central Otago sense, having been planted in 1994. We replaced a rabbit infested lake front with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
What's your winemaking philosophy?
Hands off, let the fruit do the talking - hence our movement to organic production in 2008 and now some sulphur free wines.
What's your favourite cocktail?
Gin and Tonic - not fancy but great on the terrace after looking out over the vines.
Tell us about your most memorable food and wine moment.
Venison cooked over a wood fire and Pinot Noir from a tin mug in a New Zealand back country hut high in the New Zealand mountains with the sun setting.
You’re a castaway and you can only take three wines, one book and two luxury items with you - what are these and why?
Three Wines
Central Otago Pinot Noir - it's my story and why I live and work where I do. Barolo - I love it, it's structure and power and I'll need wine that can keep. Champagne.
One Book
Booker Prize winner - The Luminieres by New Zealander, Eleanor Catton. Great characters, an elaborate plot and will improve with re-reading.
Two Luxury Items
Wine Fridge (for the Champagne), Oysters (for the Champagne).
If you weren't working in wine, what would your 'Plan B' be?
All Black half back (maybe 40 years ago).
You can cook for three guests (living or dead): who are they, and what would you cook them? Also give us a run-down of what you'll be drinking.
Stephen Fry for his repartee and wit, Thomas Jefferson who will bring a bottle and Winston Churchill who will bring his insight and a large thirst.
