Ascheri
Ascheri is a historic, family-run wine producer in the Langhe and Roero region of Piedmont, Italy, and has been producing wines since the early 19th century. Today it is led by dynamic and talented Matteo Ascheri who is known for his straightforward, expressive winemaking style.
The winery was originally established in La Morra before relocating to Bra in 1880, where it remains based today. Matteo Ascheri represents the sixth generation of the family to oversee operations, with support from his son Giuseppe and a close-knit team, including long-standing winemaker Giuliano Bedino. Under their stewardship, Ascheri has become known for crafting a broad portfolio of wines from iconic Barolo DOCG reds to approachable Langhe Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Arneis and even Gavi. These wines celebrate the region’s rich vinicultural heritage with character and finesse.
Ascheri’s viticulture and winemaking practices reflect a dedication to showcasing the true character of Piedmont’s diverse terroirs. Matteo Ascheri cultivates vineyards in key areas, including Barolo, where he captures both the powerful and elegant expressions of Nebbiolo through his Pisapola and Sorano Barolos. Additionally, Ascheri’s vineyards in the Roero region produce unique varietals like Syrah and Viognier, which offer a distinctive Rhône-like charm. Matteo’s winemaking approach avoids excessive intervention, focusing instead on traditional methods that preserve the natural flavours of the grapes. This results in wines that are refined, balanced, and true to their origins, offering exceptional value and complexity in a region where such qualities can be difficult to find.
Environmental stewardship is also part of Ascheri’s ethos. The vineyards are managed in accordance with The Green Experience guidelines — a sustainable agriculture initiative in Piedmont that emphasises eco-friendly practices, biodiversity protection, reduced chemical use and respect for soil health and landscape. This reflects the winery’s broader commitment to responsible viticulture, ensuring that cultivation methods support the long-term health of the land and the distinct character of the wines produced.
