Produced from a selection of the best grapes from Abadia Retuerta’s vineyards, this deep coloured, complex red combines the richness of Tempranillo, the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon and the strength of Syrah. The nose is fresh and vibrant, full of ripe black and red fruits combined with lingering notes of balsamic, liquorice and sweet oak wood. The full bodied, creamy palate is structured by smooth tannins, juicy ripe fruits and a hint of cedar. 2011 was one of Abadía Retuerta’s best ever vintages, delivering a style of wine that can be drunk with pleasure right now or left to develop further complexities over the next few years.

" [T]he 2011 Seleccion Especial is a blend of Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, bottled after 16 months maturation in oak. 2011 was a good vintage for all varieties and basically for all their different vineyards, which range from 740 (Negralada the lowest) to 820 (Valdebellon, the highest) meters altitude and produced a very balanced blend, with clean aromas, good harmony and integration of the oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a lush texture, ripe and round, big-sized but balanced as all varieties ripened homogeneously. Abadia Retuerta is located in Sardon de Duero, a winery created in the mid-1990s with the help of Bordeaux vigneron Pascal Delbeck and owned by the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis. The vineyards were planted after a detailed study of the soils between 1991 and 1994 just outside the boundaries of Ribera del Duero (in fact, part of their vineyards are within the appellation’s limits)... " A firm and savory wine with sliced berry and light chocolate character. Medium body. Solid fruit. A blend of tempranillo, cabernet sauvignon and syrah. Very drinkable. Enjoy. "
Winemaking
After sorting, the grapes were cool-fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks for around 1 to 3 weeks; during this time, gentle extraction was performed by 'delestage' and 'remontage'. After a spontaneous malolactic in tank, the wine was moved to "IFO" steel mini-vats. A unique system, devised by Pascal Delbeck, allowed for pump-free racking, without moving the barrels. The final blend for this vintage was 75% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah.
