Wynns
Wynns Coonawarra Estate, established in 1891 by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch, is one of the most iconic wineries in Australia, renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.
Located in the heart of the Coonawarra region, Wynns boasts the largest single vineyard in the area, known for its rich terra rossa soils that contribute to the distinctive character of its wines. The winery is led by a talented winemaking team, with Sue Hodder serving as Chief Winemaker since 1993 and Sarah Pidgeon as Senior Winemaker since 1998. Together, they have continued to elevate Wynns’ reputation, crafting wines celebrated for their complexity, balance, and depth.
Wynns is renowned for its meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking, focusing on the unique qualities of Coonawarra’s terroirs. The estate’s vineyards are some of the oldest and most established in the region, with a strong emphasis on low-yield, high-quality fruit production. Wynns’ winemaking philosophy centres on preserving the vineyard's expression, with minimal intervention techniques that highlight the purity of the fruit. The wines undergo careful oak maturation, which is balanced to enhance rather than overpower the natural characteristics of the grapes. Wynns is particularly known for its flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, which consistently sets the benchmark for the region, along with its refined Shiraz that showcases the elegance and power of Coonawarra.
Wynns is committed to sustainable vineyard management and environmentally responsible practices, recognising the importance of preserving the land for future generations. The winery follows organic and sustainable viticulture methods. This includes the use of natural composts, cover cropping, and integrated pest management to maintain soil health and biodiversity. Wynns also utilises advanced monitoring technologies to identify vineyard sites requiring intervention, ensuring quality but also reducing overall relaince on harsh chemical treatments.
