Urlar
From whisky roots to New Zealand vines, Angus Thomson’s Urlar estate champions organic, biodynamic wines with purity, heritage and sustainability at its heart.
Urlar is a family-owned organic wine estate founded by Angus Thomson, a fifth-generation Scottish farmer whose lineage spans both agriculture and whisky. Driven by a desire to craft expressive wines rooted in place, Angus moved from Forres, Scotland to Gladstone, Wairarapa in New Zealand, where he established a 31-hectare vineyard. With a commitment to sustainable farming and minimal intervention, Angus leads a small team focused on producing wines with clarity and a strong sense of identity.
Urlar’s vineyards are located in the cool-climate region of Wairarapa, where strong diurnal shifts and free-draining soils help produce concentrated, aromatic fruit. The estate’s varietal focus includes Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, and Pinot Gris—each reflecting purity and vibrancy. Viticulture is fully organic and biodynamic, with careful attention paid to natural cycles and soil vitality. In the winery, the team employs wild yeast fermentation, minimal fining, and a restrained oak regime to preserve the natural character of the grapes.
Sustainability is integral to Urlar’s philosophy. The estate follows strict organic and biodynamic practices across the vineyard, fostering biodiversity and enhancing soil structure without synthetic chemicals. Composting, cover crops, and the integration of livestock support a closed-loop system that nurtures the land while reducing inputs. Packaging choices—including the use of lightweight bottles—reflect a commitment to reducing environmental impact. True to its name—‘Urlar’, meaning ‘the earth’ in Gaelic—the estate’s core mission is to protect and regenerate the land for future generations.
