It's hard to convey in writing the sheer deliciousness of Teusner's Albert Shiraz. What sets it apart are its tannins: bountiful in quantity, yet incredibly fine in quality—so much so that they give the wine an unparalleled creaminess of texture. They do not obstruct, but instead enhance its immediate enjoyment. It is classically old vine Barossa Shiraz in aroma, although such palate sophistication is a rarity. Reminiscent of blackcurrant, fragrant black pepper, plump blackberry and woodsmoke, it also has a slight resinous note, like crushed wild blackberry seeds. There's a tiny hint of eucalyptus, just to remind you that it's Australian, but this element is ever so subtle. It underwent long ageing in top-quality French oak barrels, and the wood character is seamlessly integrated into the wine.
Albert Shiraz
Teusner Wines
Winemaking
From old (70+ years) vines at two sites in northern Barossa. The parcels are fermented separately in open vats, and the presence of whole berries as well as pumping-over (not punching down) encourages gentle extraction of flavours and tannins. Each parcel matures individually, in 40% new French oak hogsheads, before meticulous marrying of the components
Press Review
Teusner is a card-carrying member of the 100 Best posse, and with no fewer than 15 headline wines in the last two decades, the hit rate here is impressive. This is a wine that shows immense breeding from the very first sip, and, texturally, it is as velvety as it gets. The fruit is sourced from Koonunga and Ebenezer, and no expense has been spared: 24 months in French oak, of which 50% are new barrels! If you love five-star luxury in your glass and don’t want to spend the earth, Albert is your man.
