The Swinney label wines represent the top 2% of the family's vineyard production, and Farvie is the utmost pinnacle - with only a few hundred cases made each year. This is an awe-inspiring wine with cool-climate Syrah aromas and the ethereally sumptuous texture of Le Musigny. The fruit of a very special vineyard site, painstaking viticulture ensures that the bunches are protected from direct exposure to the sun's rays, helping to ensure a wine of vibrancy and finesse. Scents of wild blueberry, damson, clove, star anise, freesia, and white pepper greet the nose, while in the mouth, it is super-refined, intense and concentrated in flavour; with gorgeoust succulence of texture. There is a sprinkling of powdery tannin - discernible but utterly delicate. This harnonious wine is exceptional to drink already, and it should age effortlessly for 15 years or longer.

" The colour alone stops you in your tracks because it is as near-black as possible, interwoven with ravishing midnight blue and sanguineous red tones. The nose seems to take its instruction from the colour, with a profoundly deep engine of malevolent, night-walker-style blackberry and black cherry tones, shot through with Swedish liquorice, fresh peaty soil and cracked black peppercorns. If Nosferatu, Voldemort, Moriarty and Sauron caught up on a day off, they would drink this wine. And given its freshness and purity, it wouldn’t leave them slow off the mark after their rendezvous because, for all of the awe-inspiring qualities in the glass, this is one of the most dynamic Syrahs on earth. Lividity and dynamism join forces to make this another remarkable declaration of the power and poise found in the great Frankland River terroir brought to the fore by inspirational winemaking. "
Press Review
" So much perfume: frankincense, clove, cedar, woodsmoke and tobacco box. Oak is apparent in its youth, but it's very restrained and cradles the juicy and savoury-hued fruit. Fine-boned, clearly defined tannins make their mark, supplying the framework for the wine, allowing the fruit to swathe itself like an evening cloak of silk. Acid and tannin balance, black fruits are firm and tonal. The blackcurrant perfume and ironstone minerality dance lightly and evoke the warmth of an orchard bathed in sunlight. A captivating wine that will develop further with time. 65% whole bunch, wild ferment, 12 days on skins, pressed directly to large format, seasoned French oak. Unfined. "
Winemaking
The fruit was hand-picked from two plots of 21-year old Syrah vines on ironstone gravel soils at hilltop sites within the Swinney Frankland River vineyard. Berries were sorted and gravity-fed to a French oak vat and two demi-muid barrels. The wine comprises 55% whole-bunch wild fermentation to develop distinctive structure and texture, while promoting bright, spicy aromas. The wine spent 11 days on skins prior to basket pressing directly to fine grained large format French oak (35% new), in which it was matured for 11 months prior to bottling with minimal sulphites, no fining and light filtration.
