An awe-inspiring wine with the aroma of Hermitage and the texture of Richebourg, Farvie Syrah is a selection of fruit picked exclusively from the 'morning' side of the vine rows, which ripens more slowly and gently than fruit exposed to the afternoon sun. Whortleberry, aronia and purple grape lead into nuances of clove, star anise, stargazer lily, musk, leather and iron as it opens in the glass. In the mouth, it is super-refined, intense and concentrated in flavour; with gorgeous soft succulence of texture. There is a sprinkling of powdery tannin - discernible but utterly delicate. Undoubtedly a great wine, it would be intriguing to watch this evolve for 15 years or longer - but oh, it's so irresistible already. Utterly harmonious.

19+/20 - Made from the old Houghton clone, all I could think of here was Thierry Allemande’s Cornas when I brought this wine to my lips. Rob uses 65% whole bunch and 600-litre barrels, 25% of which are new. So, you could say he throws the kitchen sink at this, but from anyone else’s winemaking point of view, this ‘recipe’ could seem pretty tame. The reason for him stepping back is that this fruit is simply terrific. It is a direct reflection of the most rigorous vineyard selection. Matt targets the finest fruit in his ‘morning side’ picks. These grapes are tighter, firmer and cooler and this is the theme for this extraordinary wine. The pepper and game notes are very much under control here and it is the fruit this is so piercingly clean and refreshing. This is a worthy sibling to the sensational Grenache. Drink 2024 – 2034.

96/100 - The 2018 Farvie Syrah hails from a brilliant season in Western Australia. It was warm and dry but not too warm and not too dry. It was a great year for all varieties and all regions. This is the inaugural release of the Farvie Syrah, which I reviewed upon its release in March 2020. The defining quality that makes this wine great (apart from the vineyard site) is the winemaking and the old large-format French oak that it is matured in. The fruit doesn't take on obvious barrel characters, which allows the inherent delicacy and detail of the site to shine through. The ferruginous quality to the tannins is from the ground that Frankland River is blessed with—deep ironstone gravels and loam—and it is these that the fruit flavors lean upon. It is chalky and layered with rust and black tea, driven by 55% whole bunches in the ferment. There are wisps of blood orange rind, bergamot flowers and tobacco. This is a wholly alluring Syrah that speaks of Frankland River and that beautiful 2018 season. Drink 2024-2038
