In March 1927, twenty-four-year-old Andrew Peller sailed into Halifax with five dollars in his pocket. While he had plenty of opportunity to think about his future during the long journey from Hungary aboard the R.M.S. Ausonia, finding his definitive calling in a land of such great opportunity would take time. It wasn’t until years later, when he planted his first vineyards in Canada, that Andrew's dream would take root: he would create a culture in his adoptive nation country where Canadians, much like Europeans, could appreciate and share high-quality wines with family and friends.
Peller make their world-reknowned Icewine in the Niagara Peninsula region of Canada, just a grape’s throw from Niagara Falls and about two hours south of Toronto. The Niagara Peninsula is within the same latitudinal range as Southern France, Rioja and Chianti. Indeed, the Niagara Peninsula is the only place in the world where, every single year, the summers are so hot that fine wine grapes will grow, yet the winters so cold that Icewine can be made.
For those who have not tried Icewine there is often a misconception that it is just a very sweet wine. However the signature of Peller Estates Icewine is incredible balance. The wines present intense fruit flavours on the palate at first, then a refreshing acidity (the signature of a well-made Icewine) cleanses and refreshes the palate, leaving you ready for another sip.
