Quntessential Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine of Château Latour is firm and structured, slow to evolve, yet gaining awe-inspiring, multi-dimensional complexity over the decades. An absolute classic. Ranked as 'First Growth' (Premier Grand Cru Classé) in 1855, the estate owes its excellence fundamentally to its prime terroir - fine-tuned to produce magnificent Cabernet Sauvignon wine. This is thanks to the magical combination of the deep gravel bench on which the vineyards lie, with the proximity to the Gironde estuary's climate-moderating influence, just 300m away. To this outstanding basis is added concentration from unusually old vines (60 years), and the expert know-how from a world-leading viticulture and oenology team.

Château Latour
Winemaking
The Grand Vin is overwhelmingly (more than 90%) a Cabernet Sauvignon wine, complemented by a small proportion of Merlot, and even less Petit Verdot. While winemaking practices are conservative - why upset a formula that has been so successful for so long - incremental improvements to techniques are made, for the clearest possible terroir expression.
Press Review
97/100 - The nose showed warm and sunny, baked black and red fruit on the nose and a supple but dense texture. The impressive level of tannin noted in earlier tastings is softening now, and the wine is ready to drink but will hold. A lovely wine, outperforming the 1996 at this point. Picking was finished in September, taking place from the 13th to the 27th. The final blend is nearly three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, with just a drop of Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot and Merlot for the balance. Drink 2022-2062.

96/100 - I have been blown away by this wine on recent occasions, and all of my hopes for it being a prodigious example of Latour after bottling have proven to be correct. The wine is a more unctuously-textured, sweeter, more accessible Latour than the 1996. Wow! What a fabulous, profound wine this has turned out to be. It is unquestionably one of the great wines of the vintage, and will probably need 10-12 years of cellaring before it can be approached. The wine reveals an opaque purple color, and a knock-out nose of chocolate, walnuts, minerals, spice, and blackberry and cassis fruit. Exceptionally full-bodied, with exhilarating levels of glycerin, richness, and personality, this wine, despite its low acidity, possesses extremely high levels of tannin to go along with its equally gargantuan proportions of fruit. It is a fabulous Latour that should age effortlessly for 40-50 years. Drink 2008-2050.
