Louis Michel
Domaine Louis Michel is a well-regarded family-run winery in the heart of the Chablis region of Burgundy, France. With roots dating back to 1850, they’re known for precise and mineral-driven wines, with a commitment to minimal intervention.
The Michel family have been producing wine on the slopes around Chablis for generations, and today the estate is led by Guillaume Michel, the latest in a long line of winemakers who carry forward a strong tradition of expressing the unique character of Chablis terroir. The domaine’s vineyards stretch over approximately 25 hectares, including prized sites in Grand Cru and Premier Cru appellations, giving Louis Michel a firm reputation among lovers of pure, terroir-driven Chardonnay.
Viticulture and winemaking at Louis Michel focus on minimal intervention and clarity of fruit. The estate works much of its vineyard organically and sustainably, often maintaining ground cover and careful canopy management to promote vine health without heavy reliance on chemical inputs. Most grapes are harvested by hand, particularly in the best vineyard sites, and winemaking steers away from oak ageing; since the 1960s, Louis Michel has championed fermentation and maturation exclusively in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness and purity of flavour inherent in the Chardonnay grapes. Fermentations use natural yeasts, and practices such as limited yields and restrained intervention help the wines reflect the stony minerality and vibrant acidity characteristic of Chablis terroir.
Environmental and sustainability considerations are integral to the domaine’s approach. A significant portion of the vineyards is farmed according to sustainable methods with recognised High Environmental Value (HVE) certification, underlining the estate’s commitment to biodiversity, soil health and reduced chemical usage in the vineyard. Hedgerows and natural insect populations are encouraged to support ecological balance, and the careful viticultural practices not only protect the environment but also contribute to long-term soil fertility — a vital foundation for producing expressive, high-quality Chablis wines.
