Inky-deep in colour, 'Gaudium' has complex, tightly-wound aromas of liquorice, fig roll, black pepper, clove, Jamón Ibérico and treacle gingerbread. Wow! In the mouth, there's a beautifully delicate, cedary fragrance, just a suggestion of toasted coconut, brown butter, refined tannins and bright, balancing acidity. It finishes with a sustained, spicy note. This is superb: impressive now, it promises long cellaring potential.
Gaudium
Marques de Caceres
Winemaking
From vines 70-100+ years old, at 400-740m elevation in Rioja Alta and Alavesa. Hand-picked into 15kg boxes, cooled, then hand-sorted. Gravity-fed vatting, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small steel, concrete, and wooden tanks, and malolactic conversion in French oak barrels. Aged 18 months in French oak and two years in bottle before release.
Press Review
95/100 - Always the most ambitious red in Marqués de Cáceres’ range, this wouldn’t look out of place in a line-up of top wines from Pauillac in Bordeaux. Cedarwood and coffee bean-scented oak frames a youthful, layered, well-structured palate of blackberry, fig and dark chocolate, with fine-grained tannins and the concentration to age further in bottle. 2028-36
Press Review
94/100 - Aromas of roasted herbs, such as thyme and rosemary, mingle with black cherries, cloves and mocha. It’s full-bodied, dense and polished. Chewy tannins, but they melt into the dark and spicy fruit at the long finish. Drink from 2027.
