The village of Morey-St-Denis is on Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny. Wines have been made here for at least 700 years - originally by Cistercian monks - and express a lovely combination of Chambolle's irresistible silkiness and Gevrey's intense black fruit character. The Premier Cru Clos Sorbè faces due east, and the soil is composed of clay over limestone, with a scattering of white pebbles on the surface. The wine produced here is quintessential Morey-St-Denis, with both refined elegance and impressive concentration. Frédéric Magnien ages the wine in a combination of used barrels and clay amphorae, to develop the texture while allowing the fruit and terroir characteristics to shine through to great effect.
