On organic vineyards once owned by the first king of Italy, Fontanafredda produce stunning Barolo and elegant Piemonte wines with a sustainability at the core of all their practices.
Fontanafredda, a historic winery located in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe region, was founded in 1878 and has a rich heritage tied to Italian royalty. Originally owned by the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, the estate was used as a hunting lodge and a residence for his mistress. Over time, Fontanafredda evolved into a significant wine estate, now owned by Oscar Farinetti, founder of the Eataly chain of Slow Food restaurants. Under the leadership of winemaker Danilo Drocco, the winery has seen a revival, combining traditional winemaking with modern techniques to create a dynamic portfolio that includes classic Barolos and other celebrated Piedmontese wines.
Fontanafredda’s wines are distinguished by their adherence to traditional Piedmontese winemaking methods, with a focus on expressing the unique terroir of the Langhe region. The Selezioni wines represent the estate’s commitment to classic styles, sourced from some of the finest vineyard sites and crafted under the meticulous supervision of Danilo Drocco. In contrast, the Tenimenti range embodies a modern approach, incorporating techniques such as micro-oxygenation and the use of new oak to enhance fruit flavours and fix colour. This blend of old and new allows Fontanafredda to produce wines that are deeply rooted in the region’s soil and grape varieties while offering a contemporary edge that appeals to modern palates.
Fontanafredda is committed to environmental stewardship, with a strong focus on organic farming practices. The estate is transitioning its vineyards to fully organic certification, employing natural fertilisers, cover cropping, and integrated pest management to promote biodiversity and soil health. Water conservation and energy efficiency are also prioritised, with modern production facilities designed to minimise the winery’s environmental impact. Fontanafredda’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond the vineyards, maintaining a deep sense of community and preserving the historic estate’s cultural heritage, ensuring a sustainable future for the next generations.
