Bittersweet overall, with clear orange notes matched by the drying finish (with a touch of aromatic cardamom) you'd expect from a classic Italian Bitter, there's so many layers to Contratto.
Process
Contratto Bitter is based on a mixture of 24 botanicals that are infused into Italian Brandy. Both bitter and sweet orange, cloves, gentian, hibiscus, wormwood, juniper, sage and cardamom all play key parts in the flavour profile.
People
Contratto was founded in 1867 by Giuseppe Contratto, with the first Vermouth released in 1890s. In 2011, it was acquired by the Rivetti family who have helped restore much of the brand's former glory.
Place
The winery has a long, distinguished history - at one point Contratto was the personal supplier to the Vatican as well as to the Italian Royal Family. Their historic cathedral cellars are now even designated a UNESCO Heritage Site.
