This Cru Classé is a study in restrained elegance: Margaux succulence married to Pauillac refinement and structure. The wine's distinctive style comes from the estate's deep gravel soil (rather than the clay that is typical of the appellation), which dictates a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine has complex aromas of blueberries, violets, blackberries, liquorice and Darjeeling tea, and a sophisticated palate with firm yet suave tannins, exceptional balance and superb length. Huge improvements to both the estate and wine have been made by owner, Gonzague Lurton, whose pursuit of quality and sustainability led it to become the first Margaux Cru Classé to be certified organic and biodynamic. The care and attention to detail are evident in the finished product, making this a terrific, classic claret, which rewards cellaring.

Château Durfort-Vivens
Winemaking
The vines are farmed biodynamically, and tended meticulously. After dedicated hand-harvesting, the wines are selected according to vineyard plot, in small-volume vats housed in the new cellars. Matured for 18 months in 70% new French oak barrels and 30% TAVA amphorae.

96/100 - The 2019 Dufort Vivens is a brilliant Margaux, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries, licorice, sweet soil tones, spices and rose petals. Full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit, rich, powdery tannins and a lively spine of acidity, it concludes with a long and penetrating finish. The blend is dominated by fully 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, which lends the wine immense nobility. Anyone who isn’t aware of just how good Gonzague Lurton’s wines are these days should taste a bottle. Press Review
96/100 - Expressive nose of perfumed red cherries and black plums. Great texture here, so much clarity and freshness - like freshly pressed cherry juice with excellent acidity giving lift to the quite heady strawberry and redcurrant nuances. Tannins are chalky and grippy but also soft and fine. The mouthfeel is round and generous, there is richness and complexity here combining minerality, florality and depth of seductive fruit flavour with a delicious menthol touch at the end. The flavours linger long in the mouth. A wine I immediately wanted another glass of. Extremely good quality.
