Omina Romana
You've heard of Super Tuscans, how about Super Romans? In Velletri, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, near Rome, Ômina Romana produce distinctive volcanic wines from French varietals in low-yield vineyards.
Ômina Romana is a family-run winery established in 2007 by the Börner family. Located in the lush volcanic hills of the Castelli Romani near Velletri, about 40 km southeast of Rome, the winery was founded with a vision to combine scientific knowledge, passion, and dedication in wine production. The winery's philosophy, “Mens et Manus” (mind and hand), reflects this commitment to excellence, blending careful vineyard management with hands-on craftsmanship. The Börner family, alongside their skilled winemaking team, strives to create wines that honour the region’s ancient traditions while embracing modern techniques, ensuring that each bottle captures the essence of their unique terroir.
Ômina Romana’s approach to viticulture and winemaking is deeply rooted in the region’s rich heritage and informed by meticulous scientific evaluation. Each vineyard plot has been carefully selected based on its specific environmental characteristics, ensuring that every vine is perfectly matched to its site. The volcanic soils and favourable microclimate, influenced by the Tyrrhenian Sea, create ideal conditions for producing wines with depth and character. Ômina Romana focuses on low-yield cultivation, nurturing a few bunches per plant to maximise quality. In the cellar, the winemaking process is guided by a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the grapes to mature naturally and each wine to develop its distinctive character. This balanced approach ensures that the wines express the true potential of the ancient terroir, creating a bridge between past and present.
