Nebbiolo from some of the most extreme terraces Italy has to offer. Crafting terroir-driven wines through the extreme mountain viticulture of Valtellina.

Nino Negri Barrel

Nino Negri is one of the most historic and influential wineries in the Valtellina region of Lombardy, founded in 1897 and headquartered in the town of Chiuro, where the estate operates out of the 15th‑century Quadrio Castle. Entire generations have contributed to its development, marking more than a century of mountain winemaking rooted in Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca.

Viticulture at Nino Negri is defined by extreme mountain conditions and terraced vineyards supported by ancient dry‑stone walls, creating one of Italy’s most dramatic vinicultural landscapes. These steep slopes demand fully manual cultivation and sometimes even helicopter support during harvest. The estate works across prestigious crus such as Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, Maroggia and Valgella, producing distinctive Nebbiolo wines shaped by significant diurnal temperature variation and full southern exposure. Winemaking techniques include long maturation in extensive underground cellars, the use of semi‑dried grapes for the famed Sfursat wines, and ageing wines for a minimum of two years before release.

Sustainability at Nino Negri is strongly connected to its mountain terroir and centuries‑old terracing system, which enables responsible cultivation in challenging terrain while preserving the heritage landscape. Although specific modern sustainability certifications are not detailed in the available sources, the winery’s longstanding commitment to manual, low‑intervention viticulture, maintenance of historic dry‑stone walls and responsible land stewardship all reflect an environmentally respectful approach deeply tied to the Valtellina region.
