Planeta - A Sicilian Odyssey
Posted by Edward Mercer on 10 Sep 2024
The Planeta story is a journey through time and space, through Sicily from west to east, and through the five unique terrors where today they produce unique and world-leading wines and olive oils. We wanted to learn more about this fabulous and iconic producer...
Why do you think Planeta’s wines resonate so well with consumers around the world?
Planeta’swines resonate globally because they embody the essence of Sicily—its rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture. Each bottle tells a story of the land, crafted with care and respect for tradition, yet with an eye on innovation. Our commitment to quality, sustainability, and authenticity is something that consumers value, and it shines through in every wine we produce. We believe that the distinct character of our wines, which reflect the unique terroirs of Sicily, is what truly connects with wine lovers around the world.
Wine is far from the only successful aspect
of brand ‘Planeta’ – tell us about your business?
While wine is at the heart of what we do, Planeta is much more than
a winery. We are deeply invested in the land, producing not only
exceptional wines but also olive oil, almonds, and grains, all cultivated with
organic practices. Our estates across Sicily are managed with a focus on
sustainability and biodiversity, ensuring that each product we offer is of the
highest quality and respectful of the environment. Moreover, Planeta is
committed to cultural and social initiatives that support local
communities and preserve the rich heritage of Sicily. Our business is a
holistic one, where agriculture, culture, and sustainability are inextricably
linked.
The Planeta Chardonnay is a global wine icon. But what do you pair with it in Sicily and when do you drink it?
The Planeta Chardonnay has indeed become iconic, and in Sicily, it’s a wine we enjoy in many ways. It pairs beautifully with dishes that highlight the island’s fresh seafood, like a grilled swordfish or a rich risotto with shrimp. The creamy texture and balanced acidity of the Chardonnay complement these flavors perfectly. It’s a versatile wine that we often serve at gatherings with friends and family, whether as an aperitif or alongside a meal. In Sicily, wine is a part of life’s rhythm, and our Chardonnay is perfect for both special occasions and relaxed, everyday moments.
What are the greatest challenges and
rewards from producing wines in Sicily? Is a changing climate having an impact?
Producing wines in Sicily offers unique challenges and rewards. The diverse
microclimates and varied terroirs across the island allow us to create a wide
range of wines, each with its own distinct character. However, these same
conditions require a deep understanding of the land and careful management. The
changing climate is certainly a factor we have to consider—extreme weather
patterns and shifts in temperature can impact the vines and harvests. But it
also pushes us to innovate, to adapt our practices, and to explore new
varietals that thrive in these evolving conditions. The reward is in crafting
wines that not only express the beauty of Sicily but also demonstrate resilience
and creativity in the face of challenges.
Planetais a family business, is this the
key to its success, and is the next generation waiting to get involved?
Absolutely, being a family business is central to our success. The
values, passion, and dedication that have been passed down through
generations are at the core of everything we do. There’s a deep sense
of responsibility to uphold the legacy while also driving the company forward.
The next generation is very much involved, bringing fresh perspectives and
energy, while staying true to the principles that have always guided us. This
blend of tradition and innovation, rooted in family, is what keeps Planeta thriving.
What exciting projects can we look forward to from Planeta over the next few years?
We're always looking ahead, thinking about how we can innovate while staying true to our roots. In the coming years, we're focusing on deepening our commitment to sustainability—exploring new techniques that not only enhance our organic practices but also protect the incredible biodiversity of Sicily (see. The Francolino returns to fly in Sicily) We’re also excited to delve into some lesser-known indigenous grape varieties, which will allow us to showcase new expressions of our unique terroirs. On top of that, we’re expanding our hospitality experiences, inviting more people to visit our estates and truly immerse themselves in what we do. It's all about continuing to push boundaries while keeping the essence of Planeta alive—crafting wines that tell the story of our land and sharing that story with the world.
