Bertani
Bertani was founded in 1857 by Gaetano Bertani and his brother in Valpantena, inspired by innovative viticultural techniques learned in Burgundy under Jules Guyot. Over its 160 years, Bertani have perfected their technique for creating elegant, balanced and layered wines, the perfect choice for those seeking classic, refined Italian wine.
Over its 150-year history, Bertani has expanded across the Valpolicella region, becoming a significant exporter of Italian wines since the late 19th century. The Bertani brothers established their estate in the Kingdom of Venetia, now known as Veneto. Today, under the guidance of Chief Operating Officer and winemaker Andrea Lonardi, Bertani continues to blend tradition and innovation, producing some of the region’s most esteemed wines, including Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG and Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC.
Bertani's viticultural practices are rooted in the distinct and varied terroirs of its Veronese vineyards, from Valpolicella Classica to Valpantena, from Soave to Lugana. Steep, terraced vineyards, planted on calcareous-marl soils, are meticulously hand-tended, with grapes harvested and sorted manually. Bertani is renowned for its use of the traditional appassimento method, where grapes are dried on bamboo racks for up to 120 days to concentrate sugars and flavours, a practice that dates back to ancient Rome. The winery’s commitment to this ancient technique is evident in its Amarone, which undergoes a long maceration and fermentation process before ageing for seven years in large oak barrels, resulting in wines or incredible richness and complexity.
Across a number of estate sites, Bertani practices organic agriculture and much of the Bertani range is certfied vino biologico. Bertani’s commitment to sustainability also extends to the preservation of traditional winemaking methods, which require less mechanical intervention and promote natural vine health. Prioritising hand-harvesting and manual grape selection, Bertani ensure exceptional quality while minimising environmental impacts to its historic vineyards.
