Key Flavours
Serve
Sea spray, smoked malt and damp bonfire wood greet the nose. To taste, citrus and dried fruit join the distillery's usual peat and dry wood smoke profile. The finish is long and slightly saline.
Process
Ardbeg set out to make their rawest, smokiest expression ever and delivered exactly that. Wee Beastie is drawn from a combination of ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks and is non-chill filtered.
People
The Ardbeg distillery was founded in 1815 by John Macdougall, later his son Alexander would manage operations under new ownership in 1838, with his sisters Margaret and Flora (who arguably are Scotland’s first female distillers) taking over in 1853.
Place
The distillery is located along the southern coast of the island of Islay. The population of the village of Ardbeg numbered 200 at its height in the 1800s. Today Ardbeg inhabitants number less than 20.
