This special vatting marries Ardbeg’s traditional deep, smoky notes with luscious, raisiny tones of old ex-Sherry casks which complements honeyed oak notes from whisky aged in ex-bourbon casks.
People
The Ardbeg distillery was founded in 1815 by John Macdougall, later his son Alexander would manage operations under new ownership in 1838, with his sisters Margaret and Flora (who arguably are Scotland’s first female distillers) taking over in 1853.
Place
The distillery is located along the southern coast of the island of Islay. The population of the village of Ardbeg numbered 200 at its height in the 1800s. Today Ardbeg inhabitants number less than 20.
