Key Flavours
Serve
You would never drink Angostura Bitters by themselves, too bitter (genitan) and super concentrated. Rather, they are a key part of dozens of classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, the Manhattan and the Daiquiri.
Process
Angostura bitters uses over 40 ingredients. Once shipped to Trinidad, they are steeped in high-proof spirit. The concentrated distillate is then combined with brown sugar and colouring, then diluted to 44.7% alcohol.
People
The story of Angostura beings in 1824, when Dr. Siegert perfected his recipe for his aromatic bitters in the town of Angostura in Venezuela. When he died in 1870, his sons took over the business and moved it from Venezuela to Trinidad in 1875.
Place
The bitters were first produced in Angostura (now Ciudad Bolívar, Venezuela), hence the name. Angostura is Spanish for narrowing (the town of Angostura having been located at the first narrowing of the Orinoco River).
