Veuve Ambal is a historic, family-run wine producer in the Burgundy region of France, best known for its Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling wines that blend traditional methods and thoughtful craftsmanship.

Veuve Ambal was founded in 1898 by Marie Ambal, a widow who returned to her native Rully and helped pioneer traditional sparkling wine production in Burgundy. Over more than a century, the business has been carried forward through successive generations of the Piffaut family. Éric Piffaut and his son Aurélien Piffaut are now at the helm, combining deep heritage with modern production techniques. Veuve Ambal has grown into one of the largest and most recognised estates in the region, producing a wide range of elegant Crémants de Bourgogne that are decorated with awards and appreciated internationally.

Viticulture and winemaking at Veuve Ambal reflect a combination of traditional methods with thoughtful craftsmanship with the aim to produce refined, expressive sparkling wines. The estate manages extensive vineyard holdings — around 250–280 hectares across several Burgundy terroirs, including clay-limestone soils that contribute freshness and complexity to the wines. Grapes such as Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Aligoté are typically hand-harvested and gently pressed, with only the best portions used for fermentation. The wines are made using the traditional method (secondary fermentation in bottle), with extended aging on lees — often 12–18 months or more — enhancing depth and fine bubbles. The winemaking team selects and blends base wines carefully to create cuvées that balance elegance, fruit expression and finesse.

Environmental and sustainability initiatives are an increasingly important part of Veuve Ambal’s identity. The estate’s vineyards are managed with sustainability in mind, including efforts to reduce chemical treatments and preserve the natural balance of the vines and surrounding ecosystem. Some vineyards are farmed organically, and the house offers certified organic Crémant options that showcase fruit grown without synthetic inputs, appealing to environmentally-minded wine lovers. These practices are part of a broader commitment to responsible viticulture that supports long-term soil health and biodiversity in Burgundy.
