Sauska
Christian and Andrea Sauska craft contemporary Hungarian wines, in Villány and Tokaj, where they make exceptional dry whites, sweet aszú, and sparkling wines.
Sauska is a leading Hungarian wine producer founded by Christian and Andrea Sauska, who have been crafting exceptional wines for nearly 20 years. The family operates two wineries: one in the prestigious Tokaj region, famous for its unique volcanic soils and renowned for producing top-quality dry whites, sweet aszú, and late harvest wines, and another in Villány, located in southern Hungary near Christian’s hometown. Sauska's commitment to excellence is evident in their meticulous approach to winemaking, guided by winemaker Régis Camus, a renowned expert in traditional method sparkling wines. In addition to the wineries, Sauska’s Villány estate hosts a world-class restaurant, enhancing the overall wine experience for visitors.
Sauska’s winemaking philosophy revolves around blending tradition with innovation, using both indigenous Hungarian grape varieties, such as Furmint and Hárslevelű, and international varieties to craft wines that capture the essence of the region. The winery employs organic and biodynamic practices in its vineyards, focusing on sustainability and minimal intervention to preserve the natural characteristics of the terroir. In Tokaj, Sauska produces dry and sweet wines, including the famed Tokaji aszú, while the Villány estate specialises in robust reds and elegant rosés. Their sparkling wines, made in collaboration with Régis Camus, showcase Sauska’s dedication to quality, using the traditional method and carefully selected grapes to produce wines of exceptional finesse and complexity.
Sustainability is a core value at Sauska, with the family committed to practising organic viticulture, albeit not certified, and integrating biodynamic methods to enhance soil health and biodiversity. The use of cover crops, natural composts, and minimal chemical inputs underscores their commitment to environmentally friendly farming. Sauska’s focus on sustainability extends beyond the vineyard, as they incorporate energy-efficient technologies and recycling practices in their winery operations. By prioritising sustainable agriculture and reducing their environmental footprint, Sauska not only protects the unique landscapes of Tokaj and Villány but also elevates the quality and authenticity of their wines, reinforcing Hungary’s position as a prime destination for fine wine enthusiasts.
