One to savour neat The Lost Explorer Espadin is a subtly sweet and herbaceous mezcal, well-balanced with hints of sweet apple, ripe fruits and a mild smoky layer to finish.
Process
Espadín has been harvested after eight years before being cooked using local recycled wood in earthen ovens, ground and macerated, fermented in open-top wood barrels and double-distilled in a copper alembic still.
People
The Lost Explorer, co-founded by David de Rothschild and Thor Björgólfsson. The duo work with maestro mezcalero Don Fortino Ramos, who has spent the last 40 years distilling mezcal, with an approach that's deeply in tune with the rhythm of nature.
Place
The Espadín, Tobalá and Salmiana expressions are distilled on the edge of San Pablo Huixtepec, Oaxaca, by Ramos and his daughter Xitlali. The team plant three new wild agaves for every one hand-harvested and never use insecticides.
