There are clear zesty orange, mandarin and coriander seed notes, alongside vanilla and mulled spices, with a floral finish. Sweet and fruity overall, perhaps more so that many of the dark amaros.
Process
It is made from a secret blend of 40 botanicals, including vanilla, orange peels, cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon alongside a blend of artemisia in a traditional process (boiling, maceration and distillation), relatively unchanged since 1885.
People
The amaro was first produced by Stanislao Cobianchi in 1885, with the name changed 11 years later to mark the marriage of Elena of Montenegro and Prince Vittorio Emanuele II (the second Queen of Italy).
Place
Distilled near Bologna, Northern Italy, Amaro Montenegro has become part of the region's famed aperitif and vermouth culture.
