Process
First, white rice is fermented with “rice koji” to create a mash. The mash is then distilled through pot stills to create a rice spirit. This then undergoes a second distillation to reach over 95% ABV. It is then filtered through bamboo charcoal.
People
Founded in 1899, Shinjiro Torii built the House of Suntory. In 1956 they created their first vodka (called Hermes). Today they are best known for pioneering Japanese whisky and remain one of the biggest names in international spirits.
Place
House of Suntory products are deeply rooted in the nature and spirit of Japan. This process takes place in Kagoshima, in Kyushu, a region historically famous for its rice spirit making know-how.
