Pago Negralada is a single vineyard Tempranillo from Abadía Retuerta’s vineyards in Sardon de Duero. The deep gravel soils here produce wines with a distinctive firm, tannic character that balances beautifully with the layers of ripe strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit. The wine spends 19 months in new French oak barrels, marrying the complex flavours of wild red fruits, liquorice, herbs and minerals. 2011 was one of Abadía Retuerta’s best ever vintages, delivering a style of wine that can be drunk with pleasure right now or left to refine further over the next few years.

    Abadia Retuerta Pago Negralada 2014

Posted by Francis Bunker on 13 Apr 2020

We drank this as an Easter treat with a roast shoulder of lamb and asparagus. It was a delicious accompaniment. I found the flavours very intense and this was a wine to drink slowly and savour and my liking of it increased during the meal then suddenly there was none left! Well done Abadia Retuerta for a great product.

Winemaking

After sorting, the grapes were cool-fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks for around 1 to 3 weeks; during this time, gentle extraction was performed by delestage and remontage. After a spontaneous malolactic fermentation in tank, a unique system devised by Pascal Delbeck was used to move the wine to "IFO" steel mini-vats, allowing pump-free racking without moving the barrels.

Our Expert Food Recommendation

Match with beef casseroles, roast lamb and seared steaks.
